Kotkhai was a disputed area due to misrule resulting in discontentment in the people of this area. Thus, the headquarters were shifted from Kotgarh to Kiari. The city of Kiari was difficult to safeguard from the enemies and thus the headquarters were shifted to Kotkhai. The ruler built the palace on top of the hill below which river Giriganga flows. This palace was also attacked by enemies which led to the damage of the fort. Presently, you can still view the damaged portion. The enmity and the discontentment towards the ruler prevailed in the state in spite the change of headquarters and people wanted to get rid of the Ranas. The advantage of this situation was taken by the British who had already put a stronghold in Shimla. British in order to gain confidence of the people proposed a 30 year rule in the region during which the ruler can re-approach the people and build relation with them. However, even on expiry of this stipulated period, the people of this region decided to go with British rule in this region. After independence, Kotkhai was made a part of Punjab after which it was transferred to Himachal Pradesh.
